They discover that Norman’s domineering mother is long dead, and Norman has been impersonating her due to his split personality.

Psycho II (1983): After 22 years in a mental institution, Norman Bates is released, seemingly cured. He returns to run the Bates Motel but begins receiving mysterious notes and phone calls from “Mother.” As murders occur, Norman’s sanity unravels, but it is revealed that Lila Loomis (Marion’s sister) is trying to drive him insane. Ultimately, Norman regains his “Mother” persona, fully embracing his psychosis again.

Psycho III (1986): Norman Bates continues running the motel while struggling with his “Mother” personality. He befriends a suicidal nun named Maureen, who resembles Marion Crane. A journalist investigates the murders, and as Norman’s split identity resurfaces, more killings occur. By the end, Norman is apprehended, but his “Mother” personality remains dominant.

Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990): In this prequel/sequel hybrid, Norman Bates calls into a radio show to share his past, revealing his traumatic childhood and how his overbearing mother, Norma, manipulated and abused him. He recounts his first murders, including his mother’s death. Now married and seemingly normal, Norman fears becoming a father, dreading the cycle of madness continuing. He eventually overcomes “Mother” by burning down the Bates house, symbolically freeing himself from his past.
